Sermon Summary: Why do we pray? Why do we get on our knees, say the Lord’s prayer, hold hands, close our eyes and whisper a prayer? When do you pray? do you pray when you need something? do you pray when you are in times of trouble and hardship? do you pray when things are going well?
Verse 16 says “prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working”. What makes someone righteous? and what is this great power that comes when he prays?
In the Old and New Testament, to say that someone is unrighteous was to say that a person was unlawful. it was to say that the person was a sinner. And so to say that a person is righteous is to say that that person is lawful and sinless. James indicates that when Christians pray, there is great power. We are declared righteous by Christ’s righteousness in his life and in his death. and because we are now considered Children of God, when we pray, we now can employ God’s almighty power. When we pray, there comes healing and forgiveness. When we pray, we pray to the God of the universe. But we don’t only pray for ourselves and our hardships. we are called to pray for one another. We are called to pray for our friends, family and community. This brings healing and forgiveness.
